“And I looked over and I just thought to myself, what can you do?
You’re absolutely helpless in this situation because, you know, we lost a complete engine. And I just felt like my life and all of our lives kind of flashed before our eyes a little bit.
“American Idol” Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks was aboard his private airplane Wednesday when it nearly crashed after one of the engines blew out.
The plane was making its way from Tennessee to Alabama when things went awry.
“I’m asleep in the copilot chair and I wake up to this muttering sound and I knew that the pilot was going to descend,” Hicks, 40, said.
Taylor explained, “Each state has an iconic food — Wisconsin cheese, Philly cheesesteak, Maine lobster.” When asked what the strangest thing he has encountered has been, Taylor responded, “Rocky Mountain oysters,” and made a face. Find out why it got that reaction from Hicks by tuning in to “Slate Plate” Friday nights on INSP TV!
While his friends began listening to contemporary rock bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana, Hicks continued to prefer the retro soul sounds of Charles, Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke.
Hicks remembers that his friends did not understand his childhood music tastes, "but their parents did." Drawn to performance from a very young age, Taylor Hicks would follow his father to the office where he worked as a dentist and offer to sing and dance for anyone who would listen.
Shortly after his parents' divorce, Hicks discovered Ray Charles' music on the radio.
Charles' woe-filled voice helped him cope with the divorce.
